The Stars of Twilight

We started out with Les Grossman, whose Tom Cruise cameo might have gone over a few of your heads. If you have no idea why the A-list movie star was dressed up like an overweight ugly bearded producer, then do yourself a favor and go out and rent "Tropic Thunder." Then cross your fingers that Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson actually star in a movie called "Bad-Ass Cops." But never grow handle bar mustaches. Either way, the film would probably make at least a billion domestic.


The intro video went on to include some of the biggest films coming out — Michael Cera ("Scott Pilgrim vs. The World") was seen trading in his life as an actor to be a book end, Jaden Smith kicked Les's ass in a karate fight while his dad Will looked on in approval — and then Les sent us on with a show.

We must say, as much as we love Andy Samberg, Aziz Ansari's opening monologue was about a billion times better than last year's. First he commented on the 3-D phenomenon (making the astute assumption that the 3-D movies really don't look as realistic as, say, "Julie & Julia"), he moved on to "Twilight" because, since it's MTV, of course "Twilight" is the biggest movie of the year.

He briefly summarized the first two films — like anyone in the audience didn't know what it was about — before making fun of the "New Moon" cliffhanger. As he astutely pointed out, it wasn't much of a cliffhanger because OF COURSE Bella was going to say yes! Let's just say we got some pretty hilarious reaction shots from Kristen, Taylor and Rob in the audience during that.

This year's MTV Movie Awards were particularly epic. Why, you ask? I can sum it up in one word, really: f--k. Many, many, many, many F-bombs were dropped this evening, perhaps not a record number for television but a lot nonetheless. And it all came to a steaming, screaming head at the end of the show when "Twilight" star Peter Facinelli, accepting the Best Movie award for "New Moon," dropped a string of F-bombs that the censors weren't quick enough to catch!


It put a very amusing capper on what was already a great night. Ultimately it's just a word, but "f--k" has a very colorful history in entertainment. A documentary was even made exploring its long history, the appropriately titled "F--k." And while I can't embed that doc here, I can guide you through a few of the notable F-bomb moments in entertainment history.

"Catcher in the Rye"

While it perhaps wasn't the first occurrence of f--k in print, J.D. Salinger's use of the word in his 1951 novel "Catcher in the Rye" is one of the earliest. It continues to be a frequently banned book in high schools for a variety of reasons, the F-bomb included. Really though, what better way to get a young kid excited about reading than to hand him or her a great work of literature that also happens to be littered with profanity.

"M*A*S*H"

Robert Altman is responsible for some of the finest films in cinema's history, but did you know he's also responsible for Hollywood's first big screen f--k? Most people associate "M*A*S*H" with the long-running TV series, but it was actually a book first and then an Altman film. And it was that film which, amidst the bodies piling up at a mobile hospital during the Korean War, featured the first F-bomb in film.

"Scarface"

Brian De Palma's 1983 film "Scarface," for all of its campier elements, is a classic. Al Pacino's Tony Montana is quite the badass. He's also ridiculously profane. "Scarface" features a whopping 206 F-bomb drops. That's a lot. Even in comparison to the 2010 MTV Movie Awards.

"The Sopranos"

HBO's hit series "The Sopranos" was all about showing viewers the challenges of being a ranking mafia associate while balancing the daily pressures of raising and maintaining a family. It was also peppered with profanity. I can't embed it here, but some enterprising soul edited every F-bomb occurrence on the show into one lengthy montage video.

Video Games: First And Most

The very first occurrence of f--k in a video game was the 1995 adventure game, "The Orion Conspiracy." Despite the profanity -- and a number of other questionable bits of content -- the game only received a Teen rating from the Entertainment Software Ratings Board. Also noteworthy is "House of the Dead: Overkill," a 2009 Wii title that features 189 uses of the damnable word. That's a lot of f--k!

6:38 The nights big DJ's, LMFAO, just arrived. We'll try our best to describe their over the top (yeah, no surprise here!) outfits: Red Foo is in a gold suit complete with studs and spiderweb patches, while Sky Blu has on white jeans and a Michael Jackson-inspired white, black and red motorcycle jacket. Crazy looks boys, but we love it!


6:44 Random red carpet sighting: there's a dude here dressed like Waldo from "Where's Waldo." It still doesn't top the Scooby Doo or Beatlejuice sightings we had at the Universal lot earlier today!

6:46 Pint-sized designer extraordinaire Christian Siriano is here doing his thang for mtv.com. He looks like anything but a hot tranny mess in a Louis Vuitton graffiti print t-shirt, a very cool black textured blazer and super super skinny jeans!

6:52 Just saw a guy with some sort of animal-like furry cap on his head. And now Waldo is standing behind the girls from MTV's new show "Downtown Girls."

6:55 We've got wolf pack member #2!!!! Alex Meraz is wearing a light grey blazer and jeans — like we said, it will be tonight's male uniform.

No one can miss Audrina Patridge either in her her silver dress paired with those infamous Balenciaga sparkle heels!

In Nickelodeon news, Victoria Justice from "Victorious" has arrived — she's in a hot pink dress, which we think might by Missoni (we'll try to find out for sure!). "The City" girls have made their way to L.A., too. Whitney Port is looking lovely in a body-hugging mustard and grey strapless dress and Kelly and Roxy are in all black! How NYC of them!

7:59 Jackson Rathbone sighting! He's in a satin blue blazer and the rest of his outfit is black. Very rocker chic — he's making those 100 Monkeys proud! He wanted to wear sunglasses, but he told us his stylist said it made him look too cool for school! I suggested he defy the man and put them on!
